Oberyn Martell
Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Oberyn Martell is unabashedly sexy. What makes his character so compelling? Fundamentals, panache, and finesse.

There are times in life when we cross paths with men – real men – men whose very presence sparks a reaction within us: “Wow, here is a man. I want to be just like him.”

This particular awe-inspiring male personality may differ from person to person, but each of us have had that experience. Whether it’s a father figure, a brother figure, a mentor, or a perfect stranger, we hope to spend enough time around that person to absorb their traits and learn what they know about masculinity, life, and women.

However, in a world where masculinity is becoming more demonized and ridiculed, these men aren’t so easy to come by, and they aren’t always in a position to teach us in a meaningful way. These days, it’s common to be without access to powerful male role models. Sometimes all we have to rely on are books and film. We watch a movie, a TV show, or read a book... and into the scene strolls a man – he may be fictional, but goddamn is he mesmerizing. So we pay attention.

We often connect more with someone on a screen or page than we do with anyone else in real life. Personally, there are a host of fictional characters who have played a more substantial role in my growth as a man than most real men I’ve met. They were ideals of the writer or creator transformed into beings worthy of emulation. And this is nothing new. Ever since the first story was told, men have emulated the traits of their heroes, real or fictional.

The inception of this series actually began with Giacomo Casanova. While reading his memoirs, I thought “This guy’s story needs to be told in a modern form.” I planned on rewriting his adventures, then deeply analyzing his lays (which number over a hundred and include royalty) so that GC readers wouldn’t have to work their way through the beautiful yet difficult translations of his 17th century Italian.

When I dropped that project, however, a very similar idea came to me – why not analyze the many men of television, cinema, literature, and history, who are outstanding examples of power and sensuality?

Thus was born “Seduction Spotlight.” The name should speak for itself.

I will show you in detail how these characters seduce women, dominate their foes, and exemplify other masculine pursuits, such as achieving one’s dreams. Through this analysis you should then be able to truly understand how they do what they do, and, in turn, do it yourself (adhering to the laws of your land and time, of course).

With this inaugural article, then, I will shine that spotlight on my personal favorite, Oberyn Martell of the TV show Game of Thrones, inspired by the Song of Fire and Ice book series written by George R.R. Martin. Oberyn Martell is played by the actor Pedro Pascal.

Since Oberyn’s character only aired for a little under forty minutes in the fourth season of Game of Thrones, I cover nearly all his scenes in order to highlight his fundamentals, game, and mindsets. I’ll cite the episodes if you want to follow along on your HBO Go, but I’ll also provide YouTube links for each scene (some YouTube vids are censored).

Here are a pair of videos that cover every scene he’s in if you want a compilation:

"This is a subject I will at some time give a full article to, but if you think that bisexuality or even homosexuality is unappealing to women, Oberyn is a fictional counterexample to a very real phenomena. Women are turned on by lust, no matter what sex they see it aimed at. A dominant man is a dominant man, even if he appends to his dominance other men in the bedroom. Perhaps, in some way, it is even more notable than his dominance over women. Do not think this a minor note to Oberyn’s sex appeal."

This is true. I've had women comment to me that two guys kissing are hot. I was very surprised to hear it at the time but after spending time on this site, things like that surprise me less and less.

Interesting article, now that you break down this dude he has some really sexy traits. Anyway while you are on GoT I've got something thats really fascinating, when I talk to my female friends they say that they find Ramsay Snow super attractive. I take it you watch the show and for any of you who don't he is basically the darkest man in a show of dark men, and not in the good way i.e he is a torturer that cuts a another mans manhood off.

Now I find it interesting that girls find him attractive, maybe you can explain as to why, the darkness the dominate nature.
Before I slotted my female friends into the crazy category I got to thinking they are basically us with boobs and sans family jewels. I found that I too am attracted to the dark characters of movies/shows albeit physical. Maybe thats it. Although there might be something I'm missing.

Again great article.

PS: Praying you do James Bond ( Daniel Craig ) in this series.

I don't know this guy because I haven't watched the show, but from the way you describe him he sounds pretty badass and exciting, and a bona fide sigma male. That's sexy.

It doesn't matter if he hurts people or if he's a scumbag. The part of the brain that concerns itself with morality isn't the same as the one that appreciates the cool and the sexy. You can be both horrified by and fascinated with a dude at the same time.

No I get it now, you help put it into perspective. It's still what I could call somewhat confusing for me. it must be hard because what I think of as the super attractive dark guy ( James bond, John Reese ( Person of Interest if you watch tv shows) are cruel but also relatable in a way. This was what I would call the ultimate sigma males. This guy I would not even consider as attractive.( In terms of fundamentals that is). if you have a spare moment check out this scene. https://youtu.be/8RvHEFCf-B8?list=PLasGVhN-kNU0pbUiW3JkqmnVGULhqt2LP . I laugh when I watch it cause I realise he is in a position of authority and surrounded by two naked broads. Maybe he is sigma just not in the traditional sense but it still baffles me how is he attractive, the way my friends say he is ( ie through the roof hot).

Jimbo's picture

Just watched the scene. Yeah he's just badass, damaged, and interesting/intriguing, kind of like The Joker. Chicks just love that, (many guys also idolize guys with these traits, except in a platonic way).

Also keep in mind that when girls have crushes, it usually sticks, and they stick with a similar type for quite a while. For example some consider Harvey Specter to be the sexiest man on earth (and the guy does have a pretty good mix of smarts and swagger), and these will be more enthralled with the high-status white-collar types and it becomes 'their type'. Your friends must just be enamored with the psycho type at the moment.

Hey Hector,

I admire your respect for fiction! All good (compelling) fiction seems to stem from the genuine subconscious and therefor speaks volumes about human perception of reality… and there is SO much good fiction out there, isn't there?

Quick anecdote: a usual meeting with one of my married liaisons went much better than usual this morning thanks to reading the opening of this article (being calm with the prostitutes) as well as your podcast interview about being the dream weaver (and not getting lost in the dream yourself). After making her come three times (and coming once powerfully myself on our final round), she declared, "you are back!" It was a good day :) I simply focused on being a calculated stud, and it worked.

The same is true when I perform difficult music on stage: if I get lost in the emotion of the piece, my performance goes to shit. Sex for me is the same thing. We need to be aware of the emotions involved and be capable of exuding them, yet if we drink our own Kool-Aid, it's game over.

I am not that smart, and I am poor handling money, yet I have acquired two devoted women willing to bring me virtually anything I want or need (food, fine clothes, and even emergency cash in a pinch). Consider me a worthless bum (who is largely clueless about women as well) who figured out how to use his cock to survive his own ineptitude (for now, thanks to brash writers like you).

Cheers!
-M

One of the epithomes of masculinity :

Dan Bilzerian

Terrific fundamentals ( especially his tonality and mindset).

I hope you're gonna deconstruct him!

Great article btw!

Excellent article as usual, just letting you know that Robert had 16 kids and Oberyn only had 8. So the line about Robert having less bastards as wrong.

I really like the idea of this series more than anything. I can imagine people striving to emulate popular hero figures as an excellent way to teach womanizing skills.

There are many people that would be perfect to feature to in this series, but these are a few I personally would love to see.
Rick Blaine - Casablanca
James Bond - James Bond
Rhett Butler - Gone With The Wind
Tyler Durden - Fight Club
Steve McQueen - in life!

Keep up the good work!

Kind of hard to pull the "violence" part in this day and age without having your life ruined for good (though I guess you can always do MMA), but the other stuff are worthy of emulation. Nice article.

Hector, some well put up article it's a great piece. When is your next one and how many do you plan to put out?
Also is there a Tony Stark spotlight article on your list?

Hey hector, fantastic piece of article!
If you like oberyn martell and his persona, then you should definetly check out pedro pascal in tv show "Narcos" he plays a DEA cop in colombia, lovely show. Furthermore you would even love this other character even more, Harvey Specter on "Suits" brilliant bad boy lawyer who's got grace, charm, and incredible sexiness. Definetly one you would like to check out.

If you are keeping ut with this series of articles then it would great to see an analysis of Harvey specter or James bond like the other people commenting.

P.s (sorry for any misspelling english is 2nd language)

Have a nice day,
Jamie

Hey man! Great article as always! I was wondering if you could break down some of Hank Moody scenes! I know some of them are pretty unrealistic, girls throwing at him without him doing nothing, but you wrote about him a little in the college game series, the slowburn I'd like to know more about this style since it is a style that suits my personality more I think!

Thanks!

Keep up the good work!
