make a girl laughMany guys think that all women want a man who knows how to make a girl laugh… and that is not entirely false.

However, the importance of cracking jokes and making girls laugh when picking up on them is FAR overstated… and in fact, trying to do this can actually HURT you and make you LESS sexually attractive to women.

How can this be, though? So many women will tell you that a sense of humor is one of the most attractive traits a man can possess! On the surface, it doesn’t seem to make sense at ALL.

As so often is the case, however, the truth about what’s REALLY going on in the human mating game is not obvious; it’s counter-intuitive and hidden deep beneath the surface.

The good news: this means that you can drop most of what you used to do in an attempt to be funny on the approach. You can let it all go overnight and never worry about it again, once you understand the following truth:

Getting strong emotional reactions out of girls on the approach, making them all giggly and going out of your way to make a girl laugh, means nothing at all.

I’m sure you’re probably scratching your head right about now…

Stay with me, and let’s shed some light on this topic.

This sucked for a long time for me. I'm naturally very, very funny--we're talking Cracking people up when I'm not even trying. I just have a funny way of looking at life, I suppose. But like you've found, I too realized funny just ain't sexy. I thought my ship was sunk.

A study I read on the evolutionary origins of laughter changed my outlook, though. Laughter evolved as an all-clear signal. Something's moving in the bushes? Could be a tiger, could be a rabbit. Human nature is to put your guard up in situations of uncertainty. When it turned out to just be a rabbit, everybody laughed. The group was safe. All clear. No danger.

How does this apply to seduction? It lets you push HARD on a girl, especially at resistance points. If you can effortlessly make a girl laugh (remember the law of least effort) when she's got her guard up, it subconsciously sends the all-clear signal. She can let you lead. She's safe. There's no danger. Then, like Ricardus said, jump back to pushing. You can get away with almost anything from there. If you read chase's article about dealing with objections, you'll see undertones of this--the "logic short circuit" he describes is, in part, because the girl gets the all-clear signal from the sexy, relaxed, slightly-funny vibe he delivers his responses with.

Hi there. So are you saying carry on being funny?

Great post man. This one really resonated with me. I can fully empathise with your friend.

For a long time I made the sad mistake of believing those who told me that 'a good sense of humour is all you need to get girls.'

And accordingly my pulling 'tactic' was pretty much making girls laugh for minutes on end. It was often pretty creative, sharp stuff. But did it actually get me laid? Very rarely.

It drove me mad. Even though girls SEEMED to really like me, I still didn't get all that much success. Eventually I started to suspect there was something fundamentally wrong with me. There must have been something that stopped me from being all that attractive to women... despite ticking that all important 'sense of humour' box.

It was only after stumbling upon this site that it all became clear to me. Far from being my saving grace, it was being 'the funny guy' that was stopping me from succeeding with girls.

While I was out there striving for laughs, virtually everything taught on this site was being hopelessly violated: overproviding good feelings, the law of least effort, scrapping clever, not entertaining women... you name it.
This post further hammers that home.

These days I consciously try NOT to be too funny. Very little riotous banter, jokes, or anything of the sort any more. Sure, I'll still make the occasional quip if it's just crying out to be made. But making girls laugh really isn't a high priority at all.

Most of the time I'm practically as serious as Don Draper... and say about as much. And damn, it works better than being the funny entertainer guy.

Cheers again bro. Keep up the good work.

Hey man, thought I'd share some of my results on this front.

The ONLY thing I do is make her laugh. 90% of my interactions, whether it's 1 minute to several years is all me making her laugh. I get laid quite regularly. I do not qualify in the slightest bit.

Obviously, I am aware of the entertainer/dancing monkey routine trap that many guys fall into (which is what your article is mainly trying to warn guys away from). However, this is just as easy a trap to fall into when guys start "qualifying" women too. Trying to convince her that you really think everything she says is so unique and special.

If a girl likes you, then the best/easiest way I've found to get laid AND get the girl chasing/working to "catch" me is to ONLY make her laugh, even if she tries to get serious, while avoiding all semblance of trying to establish an emotional connection.

How much testing have you individually done with making girls laugh vs. not? (I'm not talking about comparing yourself to another guy since that changes too many variables.)

Hey Chase,

Fan of your blog here. I'm a bisexual female and just started being proactive in the dating scene. I have a crush on a girl who is really funny and witty. She's just really silly and a medical student to boot. She's not afraid to sound dumb versus a lawyer who I went out on a date with, and she was always trying to sound intellectual. The date was a snorefest. I also date other girls and what I find lacking in them is a sense of humor. They're nice, sweet, etc... but cannot crack jokes. I'm not sure if it's the sense of humor I'm attracted to or the ability for someone to just let loose, be silly and not walk on eggshells around me. A balance is important. To eliminate humor or make it rare is just not appealing.

Sorry about the previous message. Just noticed Chase didn't write this one.

Ricardus your statement that "sex is built on tension, laughter rather is meant to break tension" gave me a light bulb moment. Now to see how I can implement it. California Pimp article is a great new perspective. Keep it up man.

I got to the south park comment (in relation to the breaking of sexual tension) and immediately starting laughing out loud.

Because I am exactly that guy.

I do exceptional openings by making everybody, girls and other men, laugh and thinking "wow, this guy is cool" but my getting laid frequency is not impressive at all.

I think I have to re-read this article 1 time a day for the next month :)

Because english is not my native language, what does "getting blown out" mean?

Anonymous's picture

for Prehistoric: in this article, 'getting blown out' is referring to a harsh rejection or a girl putting her hand in your face and saying "dont talk to me.. I'm not interested.." or something of that nature

Have you considered that the funny guy not getting laid might be due to his insecurities rather than women not liking humor during seduction?

Many funny people have become entertaining jokers to compensate for and hide their character flaws or traumas. I was exactly like this for most of my life, so I'm speaking from experience here. Women adore funny and clever men, they just don't like it when that's all there is to them. In the past I just kept on joking and being "super interesting" up until the point where the girls are like "When is this guy finally gonna tell me he really likes me?" Eventually, the jokes become boring, no matter how good they are, for no other reason than that you've failed to make her feel anything. It took me years to figure this out, but once I did, my luck changed.

When the humor is used side by side with a playful seductiveness, a lot of women will practically fawn over you. Just be sure not to keep her hanging. Every comedy show has to end at some point, otherwise people will just lose interest and leave and they won't care that your best material is yet to come.

My advice: If you're funny like this, use it. Just don't keep using it.

Didn't read the entire article but laughter is a very good at breaking barriers. There's a difference between that and being a comedian.

Point being women arent complex just be your self. You see an angle to be funny take it, enjoy the laugh and move on. But being serious in the other hand is also attractive.

The key is the contrast in character. Most times being unpredictable is what keeps women interested.

I won't say I get laid alot. I turn down more puss than I've gotten, but I've had a ton of women begging for dick. Point is getting into a women's bed is wayyy easier than maintaining any sort of relationship so getting alot of pussy is not an achievement but that's another story
