Manscaping.”
What the… whose hand is in my hair?
I look up and over my shoulder trying to appear nonchalant. Hmm, well, at least she’s cute… Talk about the perks and hassles of sitting close to the bar with your back turned – this is the second time this happened just this evening. Wait, or was it the third… I’m not even sure anymore.
Over the years I’ve tried A LOT of different hairstyles. At various points I’ve had shoulder length hair and very short hair; I wore it sexy-messy (or on some days just simply messy), slick, neat, and professional; I went for trendy undercuts (when they were still trendy) and for timeless classical cuts. I’ve had my hair dyed with blonde highlights and I’ve had it in black. Haven’t tried bald yet, but probably will after adding more muscle to my physique.
And of course, I’ve tried combining those haircuts with various styles of facial hair (or lack thereof). Well, at least the styles that my genetics have allowed me to try.
Some of the combinations worked very well, others… not so much. A few things I’ve learned from my experimentation:
-
There’s no such thing as a perfect hairstyle or facial hair style. A style that suits one guy can look terrible on another.
-
In the short term, the way you style your hair matters more than the cut itself. In the long term, the quality of the cut is what makes all the difference.
-
“Flavor of the month” hairstyles are not suitable for everyone. But when they work, they work.
-
The way you groom your hair and facial hair is part of your overall image; it’s important to keep the big picture in mind.
-
Experimenting is essential: with the haircuts and facial hair styles you’re going for, the products you’re using, and the professional you’re going to for these procedures.
But most importantly:
The visual proportions created by your hairstyle, facial hair, and your natural features is by far the most impactful aspect of a great looking style.
How you maintain and take care of your hair is a very close second, but that’s something we’ll cover in next week’s article.

glasses
What would you recommend we do for stylish glasses, to keep a more masculine sexual edge?
Hey anon, When it comes to
Hey anon,
When it comes to glasses your face shape is the feature that will be playing the biggest role. Quick breakdown:
-Oval: everything works.
-Square: aim for rounder frames
-Round: square, angular frames is the way to go
-Oblong: go for large frames to balance your face out
-Diamond: form matters less, but ideally you want something flashier to draw attention to your eyes.
-Heart: wider frames, with bolder features on the bottom half.
-Triangle: wider frames, with bolder features on the upper half.
So that's step one :) I'll be publishing a full guide on sexy glasses on my own site, (click on my name here if you'd like to see the link)
Great Artcile
Wow... This hits every major point and then some. And it's not a long, boring read either. You have a practical approach, which is excellent.
Well done, Darius. You and Alek are my favorite of the newer writers by far. I've been waiting for an article like this and look forward to the next in the series.

Great
Thanks a lot, I've been waiting a long time for this article, so I did a search on my own and this confirmed my doubts.
Now i can start going with new hairstyles. I'm just having a little trouble figuring out my facial shape as I'm mixed up with oblong and heart....
Anyways both shapes seem to work for the style I have in mind so thanks alot.
Keep up the good work,
Pedro Canteiro
Sprezzatura
Darius,
This is very in depth. Great work. I couldn't help but read this and think of Sprezzatura and how it relates to one's image in many of these types of articles.
I believe doing yourself up and having that edgy hair works great if, like you said, you don't go overboard and let it look natural. But many hairstyles look too much like you're peacocking and violate Sprezzatura and the law of least effort. If you look at images of what women find sexy on Pinterest or Facebook, it's almost always a rugged looking guy who looks naturally sexy. I often see women liking photos of celebrities with shaved heads and a six pack, looking tough.
I never see women drooling over pics of a guy with too much gel in his hair and a popped collar. So with hair, I think keeping it natural looking is key. The problem, of course, is that 99% of guys look ugly with a shaved head and a messy shirt. Celebrities can pull it off because 1- the girl knows he's famous and 2- these guys tend to be very good looking in general.
With the edgy, modern look, there's a fine line between naturally messy and cool and douchey and peacocking. So we still want to look cool and edgy, but it has to be tempered.
By the way, face shapes are so important. I'm glad you went over that.
Cheers,
Billy
What Worked Best?
You mentioned you'll share your experience in the next article. I'd like to know what your experience has been from women based on certain hairstyles you've had.
Hey TL2015, I'd say the
Hey TL2015,
I'd say the biggest difference was how various crowds reacted to different changes:
When I went from shoulder length straight hair to short and messy on the top, I had the sexiest coworker (corporate environment) come up to me with "wow, I didn't even recognize you, it looks so hot right now!", the next way when partying with my "alternative" friends I had couple of cute girls be very vocal how much they loved my longer hair and how it looks worse now and "you should trust our woman's opinion" :)
So first things first, different styles (assuming they are executed well: cut and styling) simply works in different environments.
It was also an interesting experience to go for an undercut on the sides and raising top up. It was still a trendy look when I got it and even by my standards the amount of women who were checking me out went through the roof. However, as time went and more guys where getting this same cut, the positive effects withered too. Now, at least here, every guy and his weird uncle is rocking an undercut, so I wouldn't recommend it unless it really suits your style/face shape. Time for a new trend :)
That said, I've laid women with pretty much every hairstyle I've rocked in the last several years.
Still, best results overall with a short sexy-messy look, most fun - long hair (gets a very much love/hate kind of results), least fun - classic short cuts ("ohhh, you look like the nicest guy..."), worst results - unmaintained long hair.
RE
How long was your "unmaintained long hair"?
I've also noticed that I got the worst results with long hair. Short hair for me gets the best results.
Shoulder length. I'd say
Shoulder length. I'd say after that point even if you take really good care of your hair it becomes more of a niche thing that some women will absolutely love but most will be turned off to a certain extent.
