In Mao Zedong’s communist China, in the late 1940s, a new approach to encourage ‘right-thinking’ emerged, termed xǐ năo, which means “wash brain”. This washing of the brain was designed to scrub out bad thoughts and ideas, freeing the now-cleansed brain to think about things ‘correctly’.

The term ‘brainwash’ entered the English vernacular in the early 1950s and became a dreaded boogeyman during the Cold War era. 1962’s The Manchurian Candidate made brainwashing the subject of a popular film, and in 1974 the United States’ own mind control program, dubbed MKUltra, came partly to light (though only after the CIA destroyed most of the project’s records a year earlier).

media influence

Chinese brainwashing and American reprogrammed assassins are interesting examples, but they’re just new takes on an age-old principle, one that’s been a central tenet of states, religions, rites of passage, and social groups of all shapes, colors, and sizes, since time immemorial.

That principle is at work in everything you see, read, listen to, or debate.

It’s even at work right now as you read this page.

That principle, of course, is that every message you let into your eyes or ears informs your worldview and alters your mental model ever so slightly... or sometimes so much.

And if you’re not careful about whom you let play switchboard operator in your brain, you may end up with a set of beliefs about the world that lead you all kinds of places you’d rather not go.

I especially loved the Ted Talk! And I noticed that he used the same research you talked about in a different article (how to get first date sex, if I'm not mistaken). That is friggin awesome!

And more book lists!

I, for one, would absolutely love more articles like this. I know it's not the site's main draw, but this was simply amazing. If you have more stuff like this, please do more posts or just tell me where I can follow-up on more stuff like this. This is what I've been missing. Especially that Ted Talk, practically had a braingasm from that.

Solid read....some great points on an interesting and critical topic. You're like a badass life-coach, my friend.

On a side note, I'd recommend checking out season 1 of True Detective. It's an anthology series, so there's no need to watch the entire show (2 seasons so far). Impressive acting, persistent intrigue, and a fair dose of existentialism. Think you'd find it interesting.

Anyhow, keep killing it with the articles!

....Now I'm off to watch Deadpool ;)

Nick-

Deadpool was loads of fun. Ryan Reynolds has been one of my favorites since “Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place”, and I’ve been rooting for them to make that movie since it entered development hell a decade ago. Still can’t believe they finally made it.

Just looked up “True Detective” – sounds bad ass. I’m digging the roster of actors they have in both Seasons 1 and 2, too. Will put it on my list – cheers for the recommendation.

First of all I'd like to thank you for compiling a list of the stuff you consume.
Now, about Trump, he really does concern me.
I think he'll either be the greatest president in a while or he'll be a disaster the the world.
I fear another world war to be honest.
Since you seem to have an extensive knowledge in fields of psychology, history and the likes, I thought I'd get your opinion.

Sure… here are my thoughts:

I don’t see any danger of a Trump dictatorship, since dictators, from Cinna and Marius to Caesar to Hitler to Pol Pot come to power with their own armies already in place (whether they are voted into power, like Cinna, Caesar, and Hitler, or seize it, like Pol Pot).

My suspicion is he’d actually result in a more peaceful role for America, at least in the short-term, as he seems to be protectionist, rather than interventionist (as our last three presidents have been). He appears to be far more interested in withdrawing America from the world scene to hew a little more closely to George Washington’s advice that the country avoid entangling alliances abroad. Whether this would actually be a good thing or not over the long-term (i.e., the world’s been unusually peaceful the past 70 years, quite probably due to America’s policing of the globe) is debatable. Trump does seem to realize that war is a racket.

I’m not worried about his bluster, because he seems to be very good at hobknobbing with elites, cutting deals, and making friends out of enemies. The bluster seems to chiefly be a negotiation tool. I’ve dealt with a lot of guys who talked big, and they fall into two camps: the ones whom you talk to the people around them and they say, “He talks big, but he’s all heart,” and the ones you talk to the people around them and they say, “He talks big, but don’t trust him, he’s as slippery as an eel.” The consensus from the people around Trump seems to be that he’s all heart, which is a reassuring sign (not a perfectly reassuring one, though; but better than if everyone around him called him a scoundrel).

My biggest concern with a Trump presidency would be his chaotic flip-flopping on issues at home leading to a potentially bizarre/confusing 4 years. Though he seems to be steady enough to build and maintain his real estate empire, so it may be more that this is just him being a showman and playing to whichever crowd he thinks needs swaying most during campaign season.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the U.S. president is not a terribly powerful role. The U.S. has checks and balances in place that limit the ability of the president to do much more than nudge the country in this direction or that. I suspect the reason why Obama’s been going on a mad executive order march recently has simply been his frustration boiling over at how difficult he found it to actually do the things he thought he’d be able to do after the election in 2008. The U.S. presidency is explicitly designed to hobble any one president from jerking the U.S. too far in any one direction. Which is probably why no matter where a president stands on various issues before he gets elected, pretty much all U.S. presidents end up looking like centrists once in office.

I'm an OCD-freak with choosing my influences - I think a bit too much, honestly.
That being said, my mind and heart always knows the GC has the right info... I mean, shit... when I test it, it works!

Books:
I would imagine this is common knowledge (I learned it in primary), but book burning only further proves that those in power understand the liability that comes with mental freedom.
"In some cases, the destroyed works are irreplaceable and their burning constitutes a severe loss to cultural heritage. Examples include obliteration of the Library of Baghdad, the burning of books and burying of scholars under China's Qin Dynasty, the destruction of Aztec codices by Itzcoatl."

What gets me is, "burying of scholars". That's just bad.

Cheers

SilverTongue-

Oh yeah, book burning’s horrible.

The leaders of book burnings seem to realize they’re closing off other intellectual avenues by erasing this knowledge, yeah. The masses who get all fervent and carry out the burnings don’t realize this, though; they get whipped into a frenzy and truly believe they are destroying works of evil / works of “The Other”.

I suppose it serves its function, like anything societies do; close off dissent to allow the society to embark on one solid, unified direction, at least until it becomes wealth and powerful and safe again, and intellectualism blooms once more.

Hopefully we’ve reached a point in time where enough of the world’s knowledge is online that even if one country goes up in smoke, its knowledge and literature will live on in the servers of another nation. We’re in a much better position to retain knowledge now that we used to be… though it’s all still tied to physical servers, and those can be wiped or destroyed just like books.

Hi Chase,

Thanks for many great articles!

But on the European refugee crisis part: Its funny how it can be news to anybody that its not only "crying women and children" who are fleeting. What if Americans where fleeting to another part of the world, from a war of some sort in the future – would it be just great honest men? No bad people, criminals etc. ?

I'm not to judge whether to let people in to Europe or not, but the story you are telling is the exact same story the media are telling, and in real life its much more complicated than "a bunch of well meaning Europeans suddenly saw the true evil of the refugees". Please don't let these stories damage the good people among the mixed crowd of refugees. These stories are a result of people NOT EXPERIENCING FOR THEMSELVES! It would be the same as me saying "All Americans are like Trump", which I know for a fact is not true because I have experienced otherwise! Just like I have experienced meeting wonderful people among refugees from Syria here in my homeland Denmark in Europe. And I have never thought that they where 100% good or bad , every country has their share of good, bad and 'in between' people, including our own countries.

Enough on the politics.

Bad Frog's picture

Last year was a turning point in history. Trump is a symbol of the "silent majority" having had enough of the BS. Liberal democracy is dying. Dating & romance is the focus of Girls Chase; Chase lives in the real world. End of my lecture.

Elton-

Your leaders in Denmark have actually been a lot more restrictive about what refugees they take in than some of your neighboring countries. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re getting a rosier picture than, say, what the folks in Malmo, Cologne, or Calais are encountering.

My point about Europe’s refugee crisis from a media spin perspective was that it’s 72% adult men entering Europe, they’ve created crime waves many of the places they’ve gone, the majority of them are not fleeing from war (most are not from Syria), yet every picture in the media is women and children, dead babies on the beach, etc.

Which would not be worrying if this was shown in perspective, but it isn’t; that’s the nature of spin (and why I used this example). You take 5% and make it look like 100%, and pretend the other 95% doesn’t exist. Distort what information you let the public see; it’s how the media controls minds.

Yes, I’m aware… ethnocentrism vs. multiculturalism, nationalism vs. globalism, etc. I’m not especially interested in the political dimension, I’m just interested in the underlying psychology. Call it what you will (and moral foundations theory calls it “conservativism vs. liberalism”), but that bit doesn’t change.

your articles in the past and here today. This is a topic of interest for me and appreciate and agree with your suggestions. Particularly with broadening the insight received, however when the the three fold path was brought up; the trivium and quadrivium immediately came to mind. In that it is an invaluable aspect in classical education which are methods to critically think and determine what's true and what is false which was largely taken out of schooling for obvious reasons. Figured I would share here and come reunite with my skilled and improving brothers over here.

I also felt when you said that you'd be another influencing us, is true but there is still a large difference from providing those seeking insight while offering a well balanced argument. Methods of the tell a lie vision or other forms of media dumbing down through subversive or even hypnotic tactics that are so quick and perfected to sublimate.

For instance check YouTube.com/
... watch?v=jfd5isYwer0
Or... watch?v=-g7kDT4eP2U

Thanks again for the recommendations and don't forget to check out the trivium and quadrivium and see how it relates or may be applied as I would love to further grasp these imperative tools.

Thanks for the recommendations on the trivium and quadrivium. I'd heard of these before but not looked into them too deeply. For anyone following along, here are the Wikipedia pages:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trivium
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrivium

Wonderful stuff. I read something a while back on how the classical Greek education is really only retained among a few schools for the wealthy, as well as among classical Jewish education, in the West, and not coincidentally these children tend to be the most successful the most often. The trivium was what I recall reading about - grammar, logic, rhetoric. Such a shame these are so infrequently taught.

Hey Chase,

Funny how I wrote a comment about the media influencing our thoughts, our ideas, basically trapping us inside a box and preventing us from thinking outside the box (unconventional rebellion). I thought you wrote it in response haha!

Re: commitment point

So we know about it, know to avoid it for her good (expectation) and our good, but how exactly do we do it?

In the article avoid false rape accusations and giving her a good experience, you, ricardus listed a couple steps to take.

Post coital tone, and talking with her after, etc.
Staying there till morning and having another morning sex. (Covert a hookup to seeing her more)

But at the same time, doing these, will it be considered as passing a commitment point?
Especially if we're converting a one time to seeing her more article.

And if we want to avoid CP, do we stop seeing her after once or twice?
What about being together with her, seeing her continously but also avoiding CP?
That'll be great, but is it possible?

Chase, I'm asking this question to get a better mindframe and maybe you will see what I can't see now.

I honestly want to know what you would do in this situation as it would probably help me see what I can do.

1. Im close to 30 and As of now I'm in college, unfortunately I don't believe I can obtain a degree you term as useful because I honestly don't have the mindset for it. So doing that is out of the question and I'm already far enough that I might as well finish. What would you do

2. Only skills I have is retail and customer service, can't do much of that, but more retail and customer service, which I don't want to keep doing. It is hard for me to get a job anywhere because of this.

3. I want to get better with women as fast as I can, should I go to the mall everyday or wherever girls usually hang out? I feel I need to approach every single day to get better quickly, I want to advance.

4. I really want to be an exceptional older man, but with my limited skillet and my age, I'm lost, I really would like an idea of what to do.

5. Referring to number 1, I'm just more of a hands on guy, unfortunately those guys don't make a lot of money, this is extremely hard for me to think on what to do with my life. I have no idea of what I can do.

What can a guy do who is more of an hands on guy, I would like to make engineer money, but I can't do the courses to obtain it. I really have no idea how I can get a good career.

Would appreciate the help, thanks

Sub-Zero's picture

Chase, I really want to get good at this, I really want to get good with women. Idk what's wrong with me, but lately I have been having crazy urges, I think about all the girls I have had sex with, I think about girls I see that are sexy and picture them naked, then me fucking them, I'm not giving a fuck when I'm in the club about rejecting, I'm in the mindset of, " I will find me a girl tonight!" I'm experiencing everything that you have read in your previous articles, it's amazing, I just have to do day game and get my approaches up. When doing club game I still have a hard time getting dates, so I have a hard time getting laid from that, I only get laid from girls that I worked with.

I'm just in the mode now where I want this, I really want to get better, the approaching I just fucking me up though. when I was younger I never had to do that, I never had to talk much, but now I gotta learn, I want this, I feel I should be sleeping with many girls, I believe I can do it and I will!

1. I want to sleep with one girl a week, is this possible for a beginner? am I aiming too high, I want to get as many lays as possible since I'm almost 30. I want to be able to find many attractive women, but I don't see enough, I need to see more.

2. What can I do to get all of the basics down pat? I have read too many articles so I have a lot of information, but I feel I should just start with basic raw fundamentals. What can I work on that is basic for a beginner and help me get laid the fastest? What's the fastest way I can becoming Sexier? I want to make this as easy as possible, and also to make girls want to approach me as well.

3. I think you answered this before, but I don't think I remember what article it was, but I want to start day game, I really do, I can get close to the girls, but nothing comes out my mouth, I just get close and do nothing, no idea what to say. I freeze, and I'm like damn, I can't talk, or they are with their family or some bf from no where comes, and that makes me not want to do it. Anyway I want to be able to do day game and approach more.

4. How do I develop a good talk game? I'm the strong silent type, so talking isn't really my strength until I get more comfortable, I want to spit good game to these girls, I want to have a good mouthpiece, I want to be able to make women wet with my words. I can talk to girls, but i get stuck a lot, sometimes it's hard for me to talk.
How can I do this? How do I learn to do this as a beginner and a gut who doesn't talk much, or like to talk much?

5. I'm at the point right now where I just want to sleep with girls, I don't want to do any dates, I don't want to wait days of weeks, I don't want to waste time, I'm striving for first date sex only, I don't want to hit any road blocks, I want to get as good as I can.
How can I do this as a beginner? what can I work on now?

6. Is it possible for me to lay a good amount? I want to be at 100. I'm almost 30, but as you said in the articles, that once or 33, 34 or so, you need to have etc. Don't mean to harp on this, but I am not playing with time any more, it is going by fast, and I won't let it pass me by.

7. It's gotten to the point where I'm thinking of making social media profiles, online dating, etc. just to get more women. Like facebook, instagram, snap chat, pof, tinder, you name it. Should I even do this? I'm trying to have as many opportunities as I can.

Just want to get it all out of the way.

I appreciate everything.

I will be a master at this!!!!!!

Hi chase, Will strictly listening to instrumentals and not caring about music celebrities going to hurt my game at all? What would girls think about this? Ive seen some girls be pretty judgmental towards the types of music a guy likes before. I just think that listening strictly to instrumentals is a bit weird and they would think something was up. I want to hide the fact that I want to avoid mind control because I think it’s my personal business. Unless you think I should share this with them? Ive seen the article are you a dirty man you should be and it talks a little about how being clueless about pop culture will increase your attraction to girls but like how clueless?
