Welcome to Part 2 of our Sexy Man’s Grooming Guide (you can find part one here: “Sexy Man’s Grooming Guide, Part 1: Skin Care”).

Time to cover the topic that I consider to be the “accounting” of men’s grooming – not that sexy, but a job needs to be done or else you’re in trouble – manscaping.

Manscaping

For most guys, dealing with body hair is simply not an urgent topic, and because it usually comes into play after the clothes come off and the deal is mostly done, there’s little pressure to figure it out. Furthermore, you don’t really get that many extra “sexy” points for doing it right.

But beware – let it become a noticeable problem and it will be more impactful than any haircut or facial hair style you could rock, so much so that with some women it can be an instant deal-breaker and a major turn off.

In practice this can mean a woman politely (or not so politely) refuses to go down on you because it looks like you’re packing a personal rainforest down there, or she tries to avoid touching you because it looks like you have more hair on your back than on your head.

So to prevent such situations in the first place, we’ll today cover how to deal with body hair. I know that some of the parts we’ll be covering might seem common sense, but nonetheless, it needs to be said (and applied).

But before we get into the practicalities of dealing with body hair, we need to figure out how much body hair a sexy modern man should have.

I'm sure you've heard the notion that if you shave/trim an area, the hair will grow back thicker! Can you address this?

I've heard its actually that the cut ends, no longer having a natural taper and having a blunt end, give a thicker look.

Also have had a friend accounting that they are less hairy than their family members who have shaved/trimmed their backs and chest.

Personally, I haven't seen much of a difference, but want to clear this up.

As far as I'm aware it's an urban myth. Yes, they do APPEAR to grow thicker but that's just a visual effect and they don't actually have an increased width.

Hair is cone shaped! Therefore, when cutting it with the razor, you expose it's base, which is obviously thicker than the tip, but, as the hair grows, it blunts more and more until it gets its cone shape again. The second argument i've heard is that it grows faster. Again, research says that the only factor that influences growth speed is testosterone level (same with healing factor etc. Heck, testosterone really is a wonder-hormone!) and studies have shown a slight increase in the first 5 minutes after shaving, but a slight decrease in the next hour or so.
Bottom line is, hair growth/thickness etc. isn't influenced so much (if at all) by shaving.

Disclaimer! I've read about it quite some time ago, therefore i don't have concrete sources at the moment, so, if i may have gotten data wrong, be sure to correct me :)

I believe what has already been said is correct, but I have a theory behind why hair still visually looks thicker after shaving it for the first time.

The initial "tip" of your hair strands is usually from a much "younger" version of yourself, possibly when the only hair you had on your arms/legs was mostly "peach fuzz" (as we call it these days). So if you never shave your hair, the tip of those hair strands will always be a lighter "blondish" color representing the hair you had when you were younger. However, the root of each individual hair becomes darker as you mature, so if you suddenly shave off the top of your hair, all that grows back is the darker part of it. Thus, your hair looks "thicker" when, in reality, it's just darker from root to tip.

So the moral of the story here might be: if you've never shaved your arm or leg hair before, I would strongly advise against doing it if you want to keep the hair from permanently looking "thicker" in that region for the rest of your life. However, if you've already shaved one of those regions before, then it's likely that the lighter "peach fuzz" region at the tip of those hair strands was eliminated the very first time you shaved, so shaving after that will consequently have no effect on the apparent thickness of the hair in that location.

This is still somewhat of a theory of mine, but I'd be curious to know if anyone else has a similar sentiment or example that proves/disproves this notion.

EDIT: I should mention that I have trimmed my chest hair many times, and I have noticed that it looks darker now than it did before I started trimming. However, I have never trimmed or shaved my leg or arm hair, and it seems like both of them seem to be "lighter" in color, visually giving off the effect that the hair isn't as thick in these locations (even though it is).

What cologne are you speaking of in the article, Darius? Of course, it probably works well for you because it mixes well with your personal scent, but it'd still be interesting to hear.

"A*Men" but I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to others because if I was informed correctly, it has since been bought by one of the major brands and the recipe was changed to be "mainstream friendly".

I got one in its original smell as a gift.

Great article as usual Darius! I was wondering, do you have any insight on hairy legs and hairy arms?

Hair on your limbs is perfectly fine and even expected, however, only to a point - if hair on your arms are covering your upper arms (biceps and up) and you have more than one of two strands of hair, you should treat them like shoulder hair - remove it.

Same goes with legs, if they are growing so high that they are becoming ass hair - time to get rid of them.

That said, if you have really thick, dark hair on your arms and legs, growing everywhere, I would definitely go to a pro for the procedure as going from very thick to removed will require to create transitions and avoid hard lines, something that's really easy to mess up.

The subject says it all. Wax it off or...?

Perfectly fine on legs, ideally, should be removed from ass. Just avoid creating hard lines (going from hairy to hairless without any in-between transitions).

Let me know if the article on hairstyles is for soon, Darius!

It's already been written (actually 2 of them already been written) and is waiting it's turn to be published - as you know there's a lot of epic content shared on this site :)

It should be for soon then! Since I first asked you about hairstyles,
it did not get my hair cut and now its like in real need of a cut but I'll be
a bit more patient ;)

There is a third alternative to waxing and shaving which you haven't mentioned, and that's something like Veet for Men. NEVER use it on your man-parts, but for shoulders, chest, back etc (you'll need help applying for some areas) it works a treat and is quick, easy and hassle-free.

You also fail to address the consensus on a hairy ass. I'd say its probably very much like the hairy back - not sexy!

Colin, thanks for sharing this! I haven't tried Veet for Men yet, but I'm tempted to try it out.

I liked this post a lot and I think manscaping IS just like accounting. It's tedious and I never want to do it, but when I do I'm glad I did. I have been shaving my groin completely clean since I was in high school, I'm now 25. A girl once told me it looked like a jungle down there before going down on me. She still did but nevertheless the look on her face motivated me to do it. At first it was really irritating but now it doesn't bother me at all, but I have been considering going with the trimmed look. Great article!

Use Man1 Man Oil after shaving down there... it will save you from chafing and razor burn. It contains Vitamin E and shea butter... real good stuff. Cheers fellas.
