Bravo Hector. You kind of explained my Part 1 of my standard 1-2-3 routine.
I always try to segway small talk to their occupation as people usually feel proud and can talk about their job in length, which gives you the opportunity to connect with them right then and there.
My go-to after introductions are made, is the "what do you do?"
(doesn't matter what she says)
Always respond "wow cool, [Insert an inverse of what that occupation requires but about you]
This gives her a chance to put investment in you since she'll feel like she's the authority on why your inverse statement is not so bad or how she can make you connect to her experience.
- Musician - Wow I have no musical talent - I can't even whistle
- Nurse - Wow I could never deal with old people/sick people/ - I'm a clean freak/old people complain all the time.
- Teacher - Wow kids are crazy these days - I'd get fired on my 1st day
- Accountant - Wow FiFO..LiFO eeek - This is why I pay someone like you to advise me..
- Server/Bar tender - wow the superpower to maintain a smile while someone is being rude - Kudos you're nicer than me
Point being get her to think how she can align her experience with the lack of yours. Lifts her up and makes her go the extra mile to bring you into her world. If she does this she will continue to think how she may or may not fit with you.
After she takes this bait...she will ask about your career which gives you the opportunity for you to show value without over boasting. Continue to deep dive or when you if your ready get compliance.
But as you stated the "Fundies" are the foundation of your interaction:
- Give some strong eye contact right away until she looks away once. Then resume good normal eye contact
- Keep tone constant with limited pitch fluctuations - pretend nothing shocks you.
- A subtle purse of your lips and/or a slight lower lip bite as she's talking (she'll notice it)
- Squint your eyes while maintaining eye contact once or twice while she's talking.
- Touch her upper arm or back if in a non-awkward postilion to exaggerate something she said or you said. (smile when you do this)
If I made it past 1 or 2 topics, I calibrate and test for compliance by seeing if she'll mimic my hand movement (touch chin, hair, back of head, sip drink), body posture or face movement...if this fails...ask her to move with you ( to say hi to a friend you spot away from you/a bartender/regular/sit in a booth/table....join you for a smoke...join you to get another drink at the bar..etc.
