If there\u2019s any uncertainty between me and him, then I escalate, and I ensure that it\u2019s open conflict (no passive aggressiveness or subtlety). This may go up to physical violence or someone getting ostracized.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n2c. If my rival actually DOES something, then I proceed to escalation. Unless it\u2019s a random person, then I just rectify the situation and exit when possible.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EUsually I give my rival the benefit of the doubt, in case he just committed a faux pas. I just ask him what he means. If he continues, then I proceed with my own hostility. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe idea is to send a message to anyone watching that the cost of harming you far outweighs the gain (status, resources, etc.). If the message has already been sent (e.g. your rival is lower ranking), then your rival just looks like he\u2019s posturing and can be ignored. When reputation isn\u2019t a concern, it\u2019s just transactional.
