Well to some extent creativity is a personality trait. You can see it in little children\u2026 some just love indulging in creative outlets. Others don\u2019t and will bristle at attempts to make them do creative things. Their talents lie elsewhere.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn studies on creativity, they find people regarded as \u201cmore creative\u201d have less focused minds that struggle to shut out information. e.g., normal person\u2019s brain thinking about Topic A just thinks about Topic A, without considering a variety of unrelated items and how they might intersect. Very creative person\u2019s brain thinking about Topic A also takes in a bit of unrelated Topic B, unrelated Topic C, unrelated Topic D, etc. The creative person hears something totally unrelated to anything else and says, \u201cHmm! I wonder how that is useful to [other unrelated idea]?\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAssuming you have a creative streak, then the other side of it is nurturing it. That is looking for ideas that can serve as inspiration, new things to experiment with, analogies, comparisons, contrasts, etc.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EFor instance, I am reading von Clausewitz\u2019s book On War right now. I don\u2019t have any military experience, and one of the things von Clausewitz harps on again and again is on how theorists who do not have extensive actual military experience get it wrong about war (e.g., they fail to account for how large a role exhaustion plays in troops, morale issues, the actual time things take to get done in the real world vs. how long they should ideally take in an ideal plan, etc.). But as I read it, I think about military shows and movies I\u2019ve watched and how the people there are acting and how good a job did presenting these issues of military activity vs. what Clausewitz describes; I think about military strategy games I\u2019ve played and how tactics and strategies he discusses apply there too, or where they don\u2019t or don\u2019t get used why that is (e.g., games are not true to life); I think about how all these concepts he talks about apply to seduction, ways seduction is the same, or ways it might differ. I think about the things he is talking about and how they relate to business, which is a bit more of a tangential relation, but some of it is applicable there (while other parts are not).\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe result though is I get this wealth of new ideas about, \u201cOh, here\u2019s a fun thing to try the next time I\u2019m playing a military strategy game\u2026 I always do these cavalry + artillery armies because I like speed + firepower, but Clausewitz says the brunt of the army should be infantry. I wonder what would happen if I actually tried that\u2026 would I have to do fewer retreats and be able to wage longer campaigns with a solid infantry core, just using cavalry on the wings?\u201d or \u201cClausewitz is right about friction in execution along the military chain of command, and that the flatter the command chain the more effective it is. That certainly matches my experience running Girls Chase, but if we want to grow it bigger I can\u2019t be commanding everything, so how do I structure it as we grow to remove myself from decisions as much as possible without creating so many layers that friction just builds and builds?\u201d plus all the insights for seduction\u2026 \u201clove is war\u201d is very clear when you read in-detail about war. If it\u2019s been a while, and I am scanning the list, a lot of the time I will see old topics and think, \u201cEh, that doesn\u2019t sound that interesting to write to me,\u201d but if I click the link and read the comment I get pulled into it: I am thinking about it, looking at how the other person thinks about it, what ideas that triggers in me, and suddenly I am energize to write about it again. So at least for me there\u2019s a certain element of context that goes into the creative process. Just a lone idea stripped of its context often is not very inspiring. I need some meat around it to get into it.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EFinally I would say creativity is also a habit that you can work on every day, if it\u2019s important to you. I try to do something creative each\u2026 need to, really\u2026 or else I start feeling a little bored, frustrated, or trapped. So long as I can do something creative, I feel free. So I will write some fiction\u2026 or I will write a Girls Chase article\u2026 I might work on a product or a sales letter we\u2019re developing. Sometimes even just participating in the forums and coming up with an insightful reply that I feel was pretty creative is enough. Sometimes I get too in-a-rut with the same stuff (like GC) so I start working on another business idea and get super into it \u2014 all the new things, the fresh ideas, the excitement, gets me inspired. Or I might find some new idea for GC, based on seeing what is working for other people right now, and that gets me very excited about the business again. That means you must make it simple, clear, and intuitive.
