Yet, I don\u0027t understand why do people support positions which are totally against their interests. Like, for example, supporting militarism and foreign interventions in the US, when it only transfers wealth from the working and middle class to the members of the ruling elite and military-industrial complex. You could argue some people might have some self-interest, like members of military and employees in military industry, and they can get benefits from supporting system\u0027s policies. But vast majority of people don\u0027t have  any benefits from US imperial wars, unless you claim it is in their self-interest to maintain and expand US empire which allows them the lifestyle they have. It also exports its debt through the petrodollar system. It has been able to maintain a (gradually declining) quality of life for its citizens despite a sizable collapse in its manufacturing base and knowhow.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIt might seem like, say, an office drone working in a big American city, or a family man in a suburban McMansion doesn\u2019t gain by supporting US imperialism, but imagine what would happen to the entire US system if all the resources flowing into the US from sweetheart deals the US makes with US-friendly regimes it installs through foreign media manipulation, color revolutions, political\/military\/economic pressure, or outright invasion, plus the ability to endlessly export debt via the petrodollar and distribute it among all the other nations of the world, disappeared. Suddenly the pie gets a LOT smaller, and both the office drone and the guy in the McMansion are living in a very different country, with a much smaller economy, and a lot less to go around among the same number of citizens.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIt very much makes sense for Americans to support US imperialism, either outright or by turning a blind eye to it. The banks, billionaires, and corporations might get the most gain, but everything else in the American economy directly or indirectly revolves around supporting those banks, billionaires, and corporations.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EWe could make the argument that many Americans did not want their country to go in this direction. Americans have consistently voted for candidates pledging \u201cno more foreign wars\u201d for over a century, supported anti-monopoly legislation, and opposed a lot of the changes that have been put in place to bring the American system to its current position. Could I find instances where someone was pressing me to believe something that, should I adopt that belief, it would work AGAINST that person\u2019s interests? Any time I seemingly did, I then had to dig deeper to see if there was some self-interest I was missing, where actually it did benefit the person, it just looked superficially like it did not. Any time I couldn\u2019t find a self-interest motivator, I\u2019d sort of note it down mentally, and almost without fail months or years later I\u2019d learn something about a person or group of people that would make it click and I\u2019d say \u201cOHHHH, so THAT is why that person was pushing that belief!\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003C\/ol\u003E\n\u003Col start=\u00224\u0022\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EI read Plutarch, where great men are in service to their societies and working as part of their societies. Then I read Confucius, on moral leaders and on how the whole society functions (or dysfunctions) together. Then I read John Glubb on civilization lifecycles, and I read Joseph Tainter on societies as complex systems. And I began to think of a civilization as something more like an organism, or an ant colony, with its own objectives, as members as parts of it. And I began to look at people inside of collectives and ask myself if I could identify trends of them working together for the good of their various collective group memberships\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003C\/ol\u003E\n\u003Col start=\u00225\u0022\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ELiving abroad also helped tie this into place for me. How is Society A doing this, and its people are going along with it, and it\u2019s total BS but they are anyway? Once you start considering that species evolution occurs at multiple levels \u2014 gene, individual organism, groups of organisms, etc. \u2014 you start thinking more and more about the roles that individuals play in broader collectives.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn general I think there is a paucity of good thinking about the ties between individuals and groups \u2014 modern society is almost entirely focused on the individual, with scant attention to groups, and where groups are focused upon it\u2019s as singular masses, not so much looking at the various parts of the groups and the ways individuals function within those groups and so on. Transsexualism presents the risk that it may neuter supporters\u2019 own children or grandchildren if it takes firm enough hold over the culture, so there is a self-interest clash there between an individual\u2019s dependence on the society vs. interest in preserving his\/her own line.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EI suspect if you looked at otherwise left-leaning people\u2019s opinions on transsexualism in education\/children\u2019s programming you\u2019d see a lot more support among the childless than you would those with children or who plan to have them.
