Most systems do not collapse until they\u2019ve become so bad at serving their host populace that the populace can no longer be exploited to support the system. Looking at, say, the system in the West, we are far from that point: most people mostly want to maintain the system and lifestyle they are in right now.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EChinese historical texts deal a lot with \u2018times of disorder\u2019, and the consistent recommendation there is that you remove yourself far away from power centers and wait for the disorder to blow over. Confucius recommends that in corrupt times, intelligent, capable people simply avoid government service, since they will either be corrupted or alternatively destroyed as a threat\/potential reformer if they enter it. Instead they should wait for a powerful leader who is leading a force that can actually reform society.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E(then there is the question of \u201chow do you become that leader or form that force?\u201d That\u2019s an interesting question worth exploring, but I do not think it is what most people are engaged in at the moment. I don\u2019t see any truly effective charismatic leaders, nor do I hear any clear vision for reform, or see any coherent groups of people forming up around such leaders and visions. After that, I still feared many things, but I did not really fear death. I felt like life past that point was \u201cbonus time\u201d (I still feel that way; I am living in bonus time I shouldn\u2019t really have). There is of course still an animal fear there; if I stand in a high place or someone brandishes a knife at me, the adrenaline kicks in. But I do not have the philosophical\/existential fear of death anymore.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EOnce I met a guy who\u2019d worked as a profiler for Back of America before it became B\u0026amp;A. He said you could always tell someone who\u2019d faced death because such people had a certain edge to them, and he noted he saw that edge in me. It was an interesting observation. I started paying attention to it myself after that and discovered I could typically tell someone who had faced death too.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThere\u2019s another aspect to it, which is figuring out meaning in life aside from your current existence. I know a lot of hard materialists and they fear death like few other people I\u2019ve known. They dread getting older, they dread health problems, and anything that makes them think of death. I was a hard materialist for about 15 years of my life, and had to do a lot of searching to figure out what I believed the point of existence was, which I detailed in my article on \u003Ca href=\u0022\/\/www.girlschase.com\/content\/purpose-life-practical-point-view\u0022\u003Ethe purpose of life from a practical point of view\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThen there is the fear of karmic retribution some people may have. My grandmother was this way; she ardently believed in religion and talked constantly about it, but behind that, she very much feared death, and feared she would go to hell. Why would someone fear hell? Obviously because that person believes he may end up there. The recommendation for people fearing a karmic retribution is obviously \u201clive a better life, do right by people, and make amends for any ill you have caused.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EFinally there is a kind of spiritual enlightenment you can achieve through meditation that takes away the real fear of death. You don\u2019t necessarily need to be religious to experience this; instead, you need to meditate on death and the feeling and fear of death enough that you arrive at an epiphany where you simply let all that go.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EObviously, none of these are easy, whether confronting the fear of death directly (by doing death-defying things or almost dying), figuring out a meaning in life that transcends death, fixing \u201cbad karma\u201d, or achieving spiritual enlightenment. Both are striving for moral good, which is the opposite of nihilism, which is a sort of relinquishing of any kind of claim to moral goodness.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EI might also add (it\u2019s a small sample size, I admit) that the one nihilist I\u2019ve known very well was very focused on only doing what he felt was right in the moment and never varied from his (admittedly nihilistic) principles. Was he a deontologist before becoming a nihilist? One can only speculate!\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EYes, agreed Nolan\u2019s Batman is a mishmash of deontological and utilitarian ethics. The struggle is internal in him throughout the film as well. The film more or less portrays utilitarianism as a sometimes-necessary evil, redeemed in the last moment by deontological morality shining through.
