It feels unnatural not just because I am not used to it,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nbut because I DID something. DOING something can feel fake; being passive in contexts where I am used to be being active may\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nfeel, say, cowardly, or feel like \u0022wasting my time\u0022, but not \u0022fake\u0022.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn this case, one thing that happens when I am actively changing the thread is I feel like this negative cultural\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nstereotype of a guy who is \u0022bad\u0022 because he just \u0022wants the girl\u0022, and he\u0027d say whatever he has to say to get\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nthe result. In another words, cutting the thread and changing the topic feels like manipulation.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n(These are really key objection to pickup technique that people usually express, that it\u0027s unnatural and that it\u0027s manipulation.)  \u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIt is definitely true that there are guys, not even necessarliy that active or that good with women, who would\u0027ve\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nchanged the thread unconsciously, without realizing it. They would\u0027ve felt the conversation was going nowhere,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nand would\u0027ve just automatically felt like telling a story or switching the subject in general. I am sure\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nquite a few men and women would\u0027ve done the same thing automatically, without any agenda (remember, manipulation\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nrequires taking action with an agenda. The idea may go back to Kant\u0027s \u0022seeing another person as the end, not as the means\u0022,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nand perhaps to something in the Bible as well. ) So the part that I am not used to it is true; but it\u0027s a necessary, not\u003Cbr \/\u003E\na sufficient condition, for the unhabitual action to feel fake.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E Let\u0027s see what would have happened, had I not cut the thread. The conversation would\u0027ve ended up being\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n pretty boring, and let to nothing. Then if I were to tell my friends about it, they\u0027d argue that some women are, actually,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n boring (and I deserve better :)),\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n or perhaps that some people just don\u0027t click, and that life is generally a mystery. All of those things\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n are true, in a sense, but let me address the first one. Perhaps some women are more boring than others, in the sense\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n that they currently have weaker conversation skills and\/or don\u0027t know many interesting things to talk about and\/or\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n don\u0027t know how to be interesting without talking about interesting things. Even then, I won\u0027t be able to tell, which one\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n is which. From a Bayesian perspective, if I had a boring conversation with a woman, it makes her slightly more likely\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n to be boring in other contexts, but there may be lots of other reasons as well.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E (By the way, if she\u0027s very interesting in other contexts, that\u0027s exactly when you\u0027d say that \u0022some people don\u0027t click\u0022.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n And virtually everyone is interesting in some context, or to some people.)\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ELet me point something out. Here we have a woman who\u0027d normally see to be either (a) boring, or (b) not a match for me.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nBy applying certain conversational techniques, I end up spending time with her.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nSo now it looks like -- even to me myself -- that I don\u0027t have \u0022standards\u0022.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n(See how ridiculous the idea of \u0022standards\u0022 is, when it is so easy to be mistaken in assessing other people.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nOf course, it would be ridiculous anyway, but this particular reason is peculiar.)\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EInterestingly, then, if my conversational skills are pretty bad, I\u0027d be under the assumption that most women\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nare boring, and may conclude from that that I have high standards (not from the fact that they are unattainable;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nand if this feeling is present, it would be buried under the observed reality of so many women being boring\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nAND hard to get at the same time - because when a woman appears bored, it also means I am losing her. On the other\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nhand, there will be rare women who know how to be perceived as interesting. In that situation, if they are\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nsmart enough, and there\u0027re other things about me, they may just try to get me as their husband, and then\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nI\u0027d feel I\u0027d just won the big prize, in a sea of boring women, and my friends would naturally reassure me.).\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ESo one thing is that I feel \u0022bad\u0022 for actively managing the conversation because it feels like manipulation.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThere is another, and that has to do with the ego.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nI liked to think that I had \u0022standards\u0022 about many things. What happens here is, I have to acknowledge for myself\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nthat I am trying to win over a woman, whom I don\u0027t consider interesting, and that I am also somehow\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u0022wasting my time\u0022 (being it\u0027s hard for me to emotionially acknowledge it as \u0022just practice\u0022, because it still\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nfeels bit cynical to me).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nHere I have to acknowledge for myself that SHE SEEMS BORING BECAUSE I AM BORING HER, so technically she is bored,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nnot boring. In other words, I had thought that I had standards, and it turned out that my skills are lower than\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nI had realized, so my \u0022standards\u0022 are just a rationalization. (I feel that \u0022having standards\u0022 in dating always\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nmeans there is some rationalization going on, for everyone, as it\u0027s a form of judgment.
