In my article on sexual awakenings, Wallflower left a comment wanting to know how she could help a guy to drop his Madonna/whore complex:

Just a question for the ladies ;) How would you get a guy to drop his M/W complex? Is it possible? What would be the strategy here?

madonna whore

While I touched on the M/W complex briefly, I think the beliefs that frame the current Western feeling on sexual expression, particularly where women are involved, is something that is worth further examination.

To help rid yourself of your sexually limiting beliefs and any vestige of Madonna/Whore complex, a perusal of sexual lore through particular historical examples can be massively beneficial.

Learning about it will bolster your skills with women by helping you to set liberal sexual frames with genuine conviction and an understanding of why they work.

Additionally, gaining a more objective understanding of sexuality can also be of great benefit to any relationships you find yourself in, monogamous or polygamous.

And as stated in my previous article, a relaxed attitude to women's sexuality is something that is crucial to help any girl to a sexual awakening... so that the both of you can have mind-blowing sex.

I am a HUGE fan of this website and Chase. bigger than you can imagine. It's helped me become a more successful person in almost every area of my life. Chase's essays are clear, well structured, as pure intellect.

This essay, on the other hand is shallow, unstructured and simplistic, and included some anti-intellectual and petty statements.

You cited a quote from the New Testament in which a couple is commanded to never withhold sex from one another, and used that as proof that religion views sex as a sin that can be sublimated by only using it to conceive - this is a non-sequester.

Then you falsely generalized to the other two dominant religions, Islam and Judaism, without a shred of proof, saying, "and it's quite similar in Judaism and Islam, too."

I am not an expert of Islam, but as far as Judaism is concerned, this couldn't be any further from the truth. This is an argument used by third graders when they say, "Oh ya? Well, I HEARD that in China they do such and such." You avoided any supporting references, and simply made a giant claim in the name of a religion, without citing any references.

The fact is Judaism views sex as a holy and beautiful thing that should be celebrated and enjoyed to the fullest, for men, but ESPECIALLY for women. This is INDEPENDENT of procreation. In addition, every sexual position is acceptable, and a Jewish man is COMMANDED to perform any sexual act his woman desires.

So, where is the sexual repression you purport Judaism teaches? Even monogamy is legal in Judaism, and indeed was practiced for at least a millennium.

Next, you use the fact that the women of Mosuo have many partners has the gold standard of society treating women. Maybe the reason women in that society have 40-50 partners is the men don't want to stay with them, because that would eliminate the men's chances of being with many women, something many men like. It is thus impossible for a girl in that society to have a long term relationship, something she naturly craves and needs. How can you call this freedom? This is entreatment and limiting to a woman's self-actualization.

Thank you for listening,

Zalmy,

You raise some interesting points and counterarguments. Madonna/whore (or, the good girl / bad girl paradigm) is an especially difficult topic to tackle, and most everyone comes at it from one deeply held perspective or another.

Pete's primary aim here was tackling the question of, "How do you cast this way of thinking aside?" He only touched on the background of the thing itself with a handful of sparse examples (he probably could've done a bit more thorough job if he was going to go there, or just stay off the topic and stick to talking about the changing viewpoints side of things), and while he seems to come down in favor of viewing Madonna/whore as restrictive, he doesn't sound out an argument here for why you really might want to move away from it, or, conversely, why you might want to keep it.

Anyway, this is a topic I have some of my own views on - on why it's a prevalent viewpoint in the modern West as well as much of Asia, what the largest cultural differences are between the societies that have it and the societies that don't are, how it likely came about, and the plusses and minuses of having / retaining it or not (and, like all things, there are always both positives and negatives to each side and all sides in between).

I'll get a take up on M/W covering more of the "why" side of things - why's it exist where it does, why does it not exist where it doesn't, why should you give it up or why should you keep it - and some of the more bizarre phenomenon surrounding it, such as many women's dual tendency (at this hiccup in time, in any event) to both rebel against it, then turn around and scold men and other women who don't respect it (it actually has to do with dual and contrary incentives for women).

I think that this 1 Corinthians of the apostel Paul is in debt of these times.
The situation between men and women was:
1. Man and woman were slaves. Marriage was told.
2. The fathers of woman and man made an agreement and arranged the marriage.
3. The woman was sold by her family
4. Man and woman lived together for one year on appro (YES! believe it or not)

The frustration in relationships was very high at this time. Frightening up-to-date situation if you ask me. Paul simply wanted to provide a solution. I don't think that this was the origin of the M/W complex. The world never was prudish. It became prudish in modern times.
