One of my favorite things to do when meeting new people is this; ask them how they're doing. Obviously I'll get the standard auto-pilot response of 'fine' or 'good, thanks' or blah blah blah. Sometimes they'll even ask me back but if they do I completely ignore it and instead immediately follow-up with "Just fine?? Not great? What's going on in your life? Tell me"

I do this kinda playfully and it almost always gets a smile and a little laugh and people will start talking to me. Some even start over sharing... so that's a little bit of a risk. But it's a fun way to get past small talk that I've found and break people out of auto-pilot.

I've mostly used this on people that I just want to interact with for the sake of interaction but I've also used this on women as well.

Just a fun way that I came up with to quickly shake people out of auto-pilot when I was working for Lyft. With just over a thousand rides it's heavily field tested. Use it and Chase's advice on Deep Diving/Being a Conversationalist to help make friends or add in good fundamentals to get you some women.

Thoughts? Criticisms? Stories to share?
